Rev. John Daly, a former Imperial County priest, accused of child sex abuse decades ago

A few years ago, a lawsuit was filed  by a man who said he was molested by The Rev. John Daly, a former Imperial County priest, when he was a young boy and attended the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego.

According to the lawsuit, church officials did nothing about the reports of sex abuse to a minor by the former Imperial County priest.

The man claimed  the diocese transferred Rev. Daly  from parish to parish and that the conduct of the defendants “has resulted in a legacy of pain and emotional devastation.”

The Rev. John Daly, who died in 1989, was accused of molesting a 16-year-old hitchhiker in 1977 after he encouraged the teenager to stay overnight at St. Joseph Church in Holtville.

San Diego Bishop Robert Brom, was one of  the defendants in this lawsuit, because he took over in 1990, and allegedly had records and files on the priests egregious misconduct.

The victim, now an adult, claims  Daly picked up him and a friend while they were hitchhiking and offered them shelter at the church. That night, he awoke and found Daly molesting him, he says. He and his friend ran away and reported the attack to Holtville police that night — but charges were never filed.

The officer went to the church and found Daly naked. The priest was booked into the local jail on suspicion of sexual perversion and oral copulation of a minor, however, a few days after the arrest,  the Diocese moved Daly out of the area and prosecutors did not file charges.

The officer found out that Rev. Daly had been arrested previously on suspicion of similar sexual abuse  in La Mesa and San Bernardino and the only repercussion was he was transferred to another parish.
