Children’s vulnerability to Online sexual predators increases with COVID-19

As a result of COVID-19 closing down schools, children are even more at risk than ever before to online predators due to the developing environment and world circumstances. The FBI is warning parents, educators, caregivers and children to be aware of the dangers of online sexual exploitation and look for signs of child abuse. 

Online predators can coerce victims especially minors, into providing sexually explicit pictures and videos of themselves and online sexual exploitation comes in many forms. Predators often make casual contact with children , the gain their trust and slowly start introducing sexual conversation that grows over time. The online “grooming ” process is easy for a predator and ultimately can result in arranging an actual physical meeting with the child in person. 

For this online perversion to stop its crucial for a parents or caregivers – someone the child trusts -to have an open conversation with the child and keep the children aware of the dangers of trusting online “friends”. 

During these uncertain times, it is more important than ever before for parents. teachers, caregivers to discuss internet safety, review online games, apps and privacy policies before the child engages in something new online. Check your child’s online profiles often and explain that anything they post online is permanent and can be shared globally to anyone and everyone around the world to see.
