Herman Wins Landmark $100 Million Verdict

Herman Wins Landmark $100 Million Verdict

On November 10, 2011, a Miami-Dade jury awarded a Michigan man $100 million in damages resulting from his childhood sexual abuse by Father Neil Doherty, a Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Miami.

Jeff Herman has filed more than 20 lawsuits against the Archdiocese of Miami for sexual abuse by Father Doherty, but this was the first case he filed against Father Doherty personally.  Herman and an associate, Jessica Arbour, presented the jury with evidence that Father Doherty began molesting children as early as the year he was ordained a priest, and had a pattern of drugging and raping his victims for almost 20 years, ultimately leading to the sexual abuse of their client.

Of the verdict, Herman said, “This sends a strong message to sexual predators that hurting kids is not acceptable and the resulting damages can be horrendous. My greatest hope about today is that kids will be safer and that predators will know that I will go after them if they choose to hurt a child.”
