Child Victims Act Signed into Law. What’s next?

Following the huge victory for survivors of sexual abuse in New York, many may be wondering; whats next? The next step is to take action. Something that thousands of victims have not been able to do before. For decades, abuse victims have been suffering in silence due to the strict statute of limitations in New York. But the time has finally come for those who have suffered to begin to heal. The one year long look-back window, that will allow victims of any age to seek civil damages, officially begins August 14th. However, the next six months are crucial and victims should not wait to seek help. Jeff Herman, a nationally recognized sex abuse attorney explains, “The healing process begins as soon as one speaks about the tragedy that happened to them. This window has given the opportunity for those who have suffered in silence to have a voice. The opportunity to seek justice and be compensated for the pain and suffering that too many have endured.”

Over the past few months, Catholic Dioceses in New York have released hundreds of names of accused priests. This includes names from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, Diocese of Brooklyn, Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg, Diocese of Rochester, and Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse.
