Accused in a 2001 lawsuit of sexual abuse in the 1970s at St. Joseph’s in Vancouver. Placed on leave. Similar accusations of abuse in the 1970s had been made in 1996 when Ashwell was assigned to St. Augustine’s in Oak Harbor. He was a state-licensed foster father and one of his charges accused him of abuse. His (male) accuser settled with the Archdiocese in 1996. Three other men filed suit in 7/05. Laicized in 2005. New suit filed 8/30/10. Included on archdiocese’s list 1/15/16. Settlement in 2022 of sexual abuse in about 1976 at St. Vincent de Paul in Federal Way.

Worked at Sophia University in Tokyo. Per news in 2006, accused of abusing a minor in 1956. Professor at Seattle University 1956-87. Died 9/27/89. At some point, the University removed his name from an endowed chair in the philosophy department because of the abuse. At least one settlement as of 11/07. Name included on Seattle archdiocese’s list 1/15/16. On the Jesuits West Province list 12/7/18, noting claims in 2005 of abuse in 1957.

Accused of molesting at least 9 boys and girls in OR, WA, and NV. Died 2/12/95. One claim settled in Seattle in 10/07 for $270K. Four others settled in 2009. The alleged victim told another priest, who in 1986 informed Archbishop Hunthausen that Champagne had “momentarily” molested a boy once in 1979. No action. The Vatican permanently removed Champagne from public ministry in 9/06, giving him “a life of prayer and penance.” On archdiocese’s list of credibly accused in 1/15/16. Worked in Kenmore, Seahurst, Seattle, Tacoma, Snohomish and Lakewood. In 1/20 the archdiocese settled for $1.7M with someone claiming abuse in the 1980s. Another settlement 7/16/20.

Assigned to 6 parishes during next 15 years,1964-79, then put on leave as unassignable. Moved to FL 1988. Sought ministry in Orlando diocese; faculties denied by Seattle. He proposed laicization but Seattle did not pursue. Moved to Las Vegas NV area. On recommendation of Review Board, laicized in 2005. Hubbard suit settled for $1.2M on 5/17/15 during trial. Archdiocese settled with 8 women for $9.1M as announced 3/23/16. Of them, Cody abused 6 when assigned to a Burlington WA parish 1968-72, and 2 while serving in Bellingham 1972-75. Died in 2015. In 5/88 Conn was charged with five felony counts of indecent liberties with minors. In 7/88 he pleaded guilty to molesting six boys ages 11-13. Admitted to abuse of others police did not know about. Sentenced to four years in prison. Former supervising priest of another abuser, James McGreal. Civil suit settled with archdiocese in 1996. Laicized. Included on archdiocese’s 1/15/16 list. Another settled suit announced 11/18. On Santa Barbara Province Franciscans list. It notes that Conn was a per-novitiate candidate at St. Anthony Seminary, and left in 1980 to become a diocesan priest. Settlement 11/19/20 in the 1988 case. Another settlement announced in 4/28.

Worked in the San Francisco, Helena, Boise City, Seattle, Spokane, and Great Falls dioceses. Not listed in the Official Catholic Directory after 1951. On Great Falls-Billings diocese’s list 8/21/18. Per Jesuits West list 12/7/18, sex abuse of a minor 1945-49 reported in 2009. He was dismissed circa 1950.

Alias John Cornelius McKenna. Seminarian in Boise ID, ordained for the Archdiocese of Seattle. Accused of molesting a boy in eastern Oregon in 1968, while a student at Mt. Angel Seminary. Worked in the Seattle archdiocese 1975-2002. Adopted several youths. Accused by at least 20 of them of abuse when they were minors in the 1970s-80s. Laicized in 2004. In 2006 two brothers settled with the archdiocese for $1M. Several other cases pending at the time. Included on archdiocese’s list released 1/15/16 of clergy or religious with admitted, established or credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. On the Boise diocese’s list in 10/19. Settlement in 2022.

Accused of abuse of at least 55 boys. Order knew in 1960s about abuse yet allowed Courtney to teach in IL, MI, NV, NY and WA. Left order in 1983. Worked in public schools in WA until accusations surfaced. Pleaded guilty 1988 to indecent liberties; got two-years probation. Five plaintiffs settled for $1.9M in 2/07. Suit filed 2006 for abuse of one in 1980 at St. Alphonsus School in Seattle and at O’Dea; settled for $1.1M in Fall 2007. Suits filed in 3/09, 11/22/11 (7 claims) and 3/13 (15 claims). Order agreed to $16.5M settlement with 400 plaintiffs for abuse by multiple order brothers in 5/13. Allegations against Courtney by 52 of 400 claimants. Crosby entered the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) in 1952. She was an elementary school principal for 30 years, working in Spokane, Edmonds, Tacoma, Seattle and Everett. In 1999 she surrendered her teaching credentials after an allegation surfaced against her of sexual abuse in the 1980s.  She died in 7/07. Her name was included on the archdiocese’s list 1/15/16 of clergy and religious with established, admitted or credible accusations against them of sexual abuse of a minor. In 7/21 the archdiocese announced that it had settled two cases with claims of sexual abuse by Crosby in the 1980s, while she was principal of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School in Seattle.

Two separate suits were filed by a man against the order and archdiocese. The first suit alleged abuse by Dwyer at Briscoe Memorial School in the 1940s. It settled for a lesser sum when order said Dwyer never worked at the school. The second was filed in 2009 after an archive from Rome showed Dwyer had been expelled from the order in 1947 following an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse. A civil suit filed in 1/08 alleged Feeney abused a boy in the 1950s at St. Martin’s High School in Lacey. The abuse allegedly lasted two years when the boy was in 9th and 10th grades. The same plaintiff also alleged abuse by two Christian Brothers at Briscoe School in Kent when he was in 7th grade. A second suit filed 5/28/08 by three more plaintiffs alleged abuse by Feeney in the mid-late 1950s. Feeney died in 1980. Theodore Sullivan, who did not report Gandrau.

Retired by 1984. A man told the Archdiocese and Order in 1989 that Kealy, a teacher at O’Dea School in Seattle, had physically accosted him “in a sexual manner” in the early 1960s. Order said Kealy was living in supervised, church-run retirement facility in Ireland with no access to children. Same man filed suit in 2003. Kealy died 10/22/96. Named in a new 11/22/11 suit by 6 of 7 plaintiffs. On 6/25/14 the Archdiocese announced a $12.1M settlement of 30 claims against the Order and the Archdiocese, Briscoe School in Kent Valley and Seattle’s Bishop O’Dea High School. A man filed a civil suit in 3/07 alleging that Knelleken molested him at age 13 multiple times in 1956 or 1957. Per news in 1968, Knelleken was leave for missionary work with the Maryknoll Missioners in South America. Placed on leave in 1988 after suspicions he was abusing children. Laicized in 1996. Died in 2003. Archdiocese said he was 1 of 49 priests included in a 2004 investigation. One claim settled in Seattle in 10/07 for $110K. A second claim settled in 8/09 for $350K. Full name John Bartholomew Lackie. Three men filed a civil suit in 1/04 against the Archdiocese and Order alleging they were beaten and sexually abused at Briscoe Memorial School in Kent. The school closed in 1970. The suit alleges that seven religious brothers abused the three boys in the 1940s-60s. Claims believed to be included in settlements reached with the Archdiocese and Order in 11/08 and 1/09. Lackie died 2/5/92. He also worked at Damien High in Honolulu at some point. Ordained in Colombia. Brought two impoverished teen boys from Colombia to live with him at St. John’s in Seattle where he worked 1985-86. Promised them US citizenship via adoption, then allegedly sexually abused them for years. One of them filed a civil suit in 2004. The Archdiocese knew of Mitchell’s history in 1986 or 1987 but did nothing legally because the abuse was thought to have occurred only in Colombia. Sent for treatment, then removed from archdiocesan assignments. A second suit was filed in 2005. Accused in a 2002 lawsuit of abuse of a boy, ages 11-13, in the early 1970s. Moffat was assigned to Holy Family Church in Kirkland at the time. Placed on leave summer, 2002. Plaintiff died by suicide shortly after the suit was filed and his parents joined the suit. Suit settled in 6/05. A second suit was filed in 9/03 and later settled. Permanently barred from active ministry in 2/06. Accused in a new suit filed in 6/11. In 1993 a teenage boy complained that O’Brien sexually abused him during a 1991 canoe trip. O’Brien was placed on leave and police notified. Police could not substantiate allegations and Archdiocese allowed him to return to work at the same parish. Reassigned to a new parish 1999. Placed on leave in 2004 when diocese reopened investigation. Returned to assignment within a month. Placed on leave for third time 7/08 on allegations from 1960s. Laicized at own request in 2/10. Included on archdiocese’s list 1/15/16. Settlement 7/16/20 of claims of abuse of a boy at St. Michael’s in Snohomish, where O’Brien was pastor 1974-79.

Review board was still reviewing the case in 2002. O’Neill died in Ireland in 8/11.

Pastor since 2001 of St. Francis of Xavier in Missoula MT when removed in 10/19 after a Missoula woman alleged “inappropriate contact.” Sent to the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, CA. In 2/20 another woman alleged that Perry sexually abused her when she was a Seattle Prep School student 1979-83. Perry’s name was added in 7/20 by the Jesuits West Province to its list of credibly accused. He was permanently removed from public ministry and was to remain at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center under a safety plan.

Allegation in the late 1990s. Settled. Quigg continued as a priest. Review Board Report of 6/04 identified Quigg as one of four priests where there was insufficient evident to support an allegation of abuse of a minor. Board admitted that it was sufficient evidence to prove he did sexually abuse a 17-year-old (church age of consent at the time was 16). Board stated Quigg’s actions were so egregious that he was unsuitable for the priesthood. Supposedly removed from ministry, but archdiocese has admitted that he continued to perform baptisms and other services and priestly duties at other local churches. Retired in 2000. Laicization reported in 7/5/15 church bulletin. Died in 11/15. A woman sought counseling in 1988, alleging abuse by Renggli when she was in high school; she was referred by the Seattle archdiocese to a counseling agency. In 2005 she filed suit, alleging she did not understand the relationship between the counseling agency and the archdiocese. Renggli left the priesthood, married, and went to work with a group called Rent-a-Priest. Toner was at St. Benedict’s Mission (later called Our Lady Queen of Heaven) in Tacoma 1939-1946. His ordination date is unclear; he arrived in WA state in 1925 from Vancouver. Deceased. A civil suit filed in Seattle in 1/04 by three plaintiffs alleged extensive sexual and physical abuse by seven members of the Irish Christian Brothers, including Br. Warren, at the Briscoe Memorial School for Boys in Kent WA in the 1940s-60s and at O’Dea High School. Briscoe was owned by the Archdiocese and run by the order. Other men have come forward with stories of their own to support these allegations.
