One of New Jersey’s most longstanding Special Victims Unit prosecutors, John devoted over two decades of his career prosecuting child abuse and sex crimes at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and was a supervisor for over 16 years. As SVU Chief Assistant Prosecutor, John also oversaw domestic violence cases, bias crimes, and Megan’s Law, working on cases attracting national and international media coverage. John has successfully argued two times before the New Jersey Supreme Court and appeared before the Appellate Division for numerous oral arguments, including twice last year.
In 2023, John also began three jury trials before settling the cases at the victims’ requests for higher sentences than the defendants would have received if they had settled earlier. John’s zealous defense of survivors’ privacy produced two major victims’ rights decisions, State v. Gilchrist, 381 N.J. Super. 138 (App. Div. 2005) (reversing a judge’s decision ordering law enforcement to photograph a rape victim and turn over the photo to the Defendant) and State v. Ramirez, 252 N.J. 277 (2022). (Following a new procedure on protective orders, John succeeded in keeping a victim’s home address confidential because she was fearful the rapist would follow up on his threat to kill her if she reported the crime.) John tried approximately 40 cases to verdict, winning convictions of Aggravated Sexual Assault, murder and other major felonies, achieving numerous multi-decade sentences.
John personally handled and supervised successful prosecutions leading to state prison sentences on teachers, religious leaders, coaches, a Big Brother mentor and daycare and camp instructors who abused children.
John is a Trustee of the Hudson County Bar Association. John also volunteered as a youth sports coach for the last decade, focusing on fun and safety.
