A tragic 2024 shooting in Palm Bay, Florida, left four people dead—including retired Catholic priest Father Robert “Bob” Hoeffner. In the aftermath, unsettling allegations have surfaced suggesting that Hoeffner may have sexually abused children during his decades of service. While the full circumstances remain unclear, these claims have prompted renewed scrutiny of the priest’s past and the systems that may have failed to intervene.
According to multiple news reports and police records, handwritten documents describing acts of child sexual abuse were discovered at Hoeffner’s home. While it remains unclear who authored the notes, their contents have raised serious concerns about Hoeffner’s past conduct.
The shooter, 24-year-old Brandon Kapas, was also killed during the incident. Members of Kapas’s family have since told investigators they believe he may have been abused by Hoeffner as a child. Hoeffner and Kapas first met when Hoeffner was a priest at St. Joseph Catholic School on Babcock Street, where Kapas was a student. A former classmate of Kapas has also come forward to report alleged inappropriate behavior by the late priest.
In response to the shooting, the Diocese of Orlando issued a statement expressing sorrow over the tragedy but has not acknowledged whether it received prior complaints or was aware of any misconduct by Hoeffner. The priest had served in the Diocese for more than 50 years before retiring.
