Herman Law Seeks Justice For Survivors

Sister Mary Jane Vidnansky was a religious sister and member of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph who taught at Mater Dolorosa School in Holyoke, Massachusetts, a school operated by the order rather than by the Diocese of Springfield. In December 2004, a civil lawsuit filed in Hampden Superior Court alleged that Vidnansky had sexually abused a minor student over a two-year period between approximately 1974 and 1976.

According to the lawsuit, the alleged abuse included a sexual relationship between Vidnansky and a then-minor student. The plaintiff further alleged that Vidnansky told him she had become pregnant and had an abortion during that period. The plaintiff’s attorney stated that his client left the relationship when he began to develop age-appropriate interests, and that Vidnansky had pursued him. According to the attorney, the plaintiff retained photographs, a report card signed by Vidnansky, and a lock of her hair.

A member of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph confirmed that Vidnansky was no longer a member of the order; according to the plaintiff’s attorney, she left the order in the mid-1970s. The lawsuit is believed to be among the first known legal actions against a woman religious in the diocese. Vidnansky died on October 3, 2024, at age 78.
