1 800 686 9921Alexander Delgado was a seminarian from Colombia who was placed by the Diocese of Fall River at Cathedral Camp, a diocesan-owned retreat facility in East Freetown, Massachusetts. In August 1995, a woman reported that she had been raped by Delgado at the camp after seeking counseling from him. Delgado was criminally charged and arraigned, but was subsequently acquitted by a jury.
In a civil lawsuit filed in August 1998, the same woman alleged that just prior to her assault, Delgado had been accused of molesting a thirteen-year-old girl, and that he reportedly pleaded guilty to a related charge in 1997. According to published reports, Delgado may have returned to Colombia as part of a probation agreement. In January 2021, the Diocese of Fall River publicly disclosed Delgado’s name as part of its list of clergy facing sexual abuse allegations, identifying Cathedral Camp in East Freetown as a location where he had worked.
With decades of dedicated advocacy, we have held abusers and institutions accountable, helping survivors secure justice and the resources to move forward.
For over two decades, we have focused solely on advocating for survivors, combining legal skill with compassion to guide them toward justice and healing.
We are honored to have guided thousands of survivors through the legal process, offering support, advocacy, and the resources they need to reclaim their lives.
Although Delgado was acquitted of criminal charges, a criminal acquittal does not foreclose the possibility of civil accountability. Criminal and civil proceedings operate under different standards: in civil litigation, survivors may be able to pursue a claim by demonstrating that sexual abuse was more likely than not to have occurred, rather than meeting the higher criminal standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. An attorney can evaluate the specific facts of your situation.
Questions also remain about what the Diocese of Fall River knew regarding Delgado’s background before placing him at Cathedral Camp — including what screening was conducted and whether diocesan officials had any knowledge of prior allegations at the time of his assignment. Civil litigation may allow survivors to explore not only the conduct of the alleged abuser, but also the institutional decisions that placed him in contact with vulnerable individuals.
If you or someone you know may have been sexually abused by Alexander Delgado while he was associated with the Diocese of Fall River, you may be able to pursue civil legal action. Where recovery is obtained, it can help support access to therapy, education, and other healing resources. Contact Herman Law today for a confidential, no-obligation consultation.
