The case of Father Paul Archambault represents one of the most recently documented instances of clergy sexual abuse within the Springfield Diocese. Ordained in 2005, Father Archambault served in ministry for approximately six years across multiple parishes in western Massachusetts. In July 2013, a 20-year-old man filed a civil lawsuit in Hampshire Superior Court alleging that Father Archambault had sexually abused him over a four-year period beginning when he was 13. According to the complaint, the abuse occurred at multiple locations, including St. Patrick’s Parish in Chicopee, a religious retreat in Vermont, and a Northampton home. The lawsuit named the Diocese of Springfield and parish leadership as defendants, alleging their failure to protect the child despite prior concerns about Father Archambault’s behavior.
In March 2016, the Springfield Diocese settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount. At the same time, the Diocese formally recognized the allegation as credible and added Father Archambault’s name to its public list of clergy with credible allegations of abuse. A June 2021 update to the Diocese’s disclosure report noted more than one credible allegation against Father Archambault, suggesting a pattern of concerning conduct during his brief tenure in ministry.
According to the allegations in the lawsuit, Father Archambault used his pastoral roles and access as a hospital chaplain to cultivate trust and proximity to the victim. His conduct — the subject of civil litigation that settled in 2016 and deemed credible by the Diocese’s own review process — underscores systemic failures in oversight even after national reforms. Each survivor who comes forward helps expose institutional failures and supports others in their pursuit of accountability.
