Laurence ‘Laurie’ Joseph Maher, 81, a former mayor who campaigned for the homeless for many years on the New South Wales Central Coast is the ninth person to be charged with multiple child sex offenses dating back to the 1970’s and 80’s.
Maher was a superintendent at the Mount Penang Training School and former independent Mayor of Gosford City Council and is accused of sexually abusing at least 6 young boys during the period of 1977- 1988.
Maher, who did not attend his court hearing, is charged wit h13 offenses including three counts of indecent assault on male and six counts of sexual assault knowing no consent not given.
Because of COVID-19 Maher’s case has been adjourned, to return to Penrith Local Court on June 19.
