1 800 686 9921Robert Cornigans was publicly identified by the Jesuits’ Northeast Province as credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor on January 15, 2019. According to the Province, a report made in 2003 documented alleged abuse occurring in 1976, at the time Cornigans was serving as a teacher at Boston College High School in Massachusetts. While some news accounts refer to him as a former priest, Jesuit records list him as “Mr.,” suggesting he may have been a scholastic or lay teacher rather than fully ordained at the time of the alleged incidents.
Following the 2019 disclosure, Cornigans’ professional history came under scrutiny. He had also taught at Fairfield Prep in Fairfield, Connecticut, and later at a private school in Dobbs Ferry, New York, where he was reportedly forced to resign in January 2019 after news of the allegations emerged. His inclusion on the Jesuits’ public list reflects a broader institutional effort to identify and acknowledge individuals with credible allegations of abuse.
For those who allege abuse by Cornigans, the Jesuits’ disclosure may represent both a measure of validation and a call for accountability from the educational and religious institutions responsible for safeguarding children.

Survivors in Massachusetts may be able to pursue civil claims for emotional distress, therapy costs, and other lifelong impacts allegedly caused by sexual abuse. In cases involving educators or religious personnel, discovery may include personnel files, internal correspondence, and historical records, which can help establish patterns of misconduct and institutional neglect.
For many survivors, civil action may provide an opportunity to have their experiences formally recognized and to seek transparency and institutional accountability. Legal action can also serve as a means of highlighting systemic failures and pressing institutions toward greater accountability, potentially offering a measure of protection for future generations. For many who choose to pursue civil claims, doing so can be a means of reclaiming agency and voice — and potentially transforming years of silence into a formal, documented record.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
