Herman Law, a firm dedicated exclusively to representing victims of childhood sexual abuse, is proud to announce that a Los Angeles jury has brought back an $8 million verdict in a case involving alleged sexual abuse at Alain Leroy Locke High School in Los Angeles, California, delivering long-awaited accountability from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
The case, brought under California’s Child Victims Act, alleges that the LAUSD failed to properly supervise and protect Herman Law’s client from former Alain Leroy Locke High School principal and perpetrator Jack Jacobson, resulting in lasting and profound trauma. The lawsuit further alleges that Jacobson likely abused multiple students during his lengthy career within the district, raising concerns about broader misconduct that went unchecked by the institution.
The lawsuit alleges that Jack Jacobson abused his position of authority at Alain Leroy Locke High School, sexually abusing Herman Law’s client both on campus and at the principal’s home. The repeated abuse derailed the bright trajectory of the survivor’s life, leading to years of hardship and trauma that the survivor continues to carry today.
Now, years later, the survivor has come forward to share this traumatic experience in an act of courage that underscores the lasting impact of childhood sexual abuse and the barriers many survivors face in speaking out.
The client was represented by Herman Law attorneys Amy Frerich and Allegra Rineer, who successfully held one of the nation’s largest public school systems accountable. Their work reflects a broader shift in the legal landscape, where survivors and the attorneys advocating for them are increasingly challenging powerful institutions that once operated without scrutiny. This case is one of hundreds of sexual abuse claims filed against LAUSD, the second-largest school district in the United States and reflects a broader pattern of systemic failure to protect students.
“The Los Angeles Unified School District will finally be held accountable for its failure to protect students from sexual predators within the district,” said Frerich.
Under California’s Child Victims Act, this case was able to move forward under an extended statute of limitations that temporarily revived previously time-barred claims, allowing survivors to seek justice decades after the abuse occurred.
While the settlement marks an important step toward accountability, the survivor’s journey toward healing continues. For many survivors, justice is not an endpoint, but the beginning of a long and deeply personal process.
