A Contra Costa County jury found Nicholas Moseby, a former San Ramon Valley teacher and cheerleading coach, guilty of sexually abusing students—a case that raises serious questions about how school officials responded to repeated warnings about his behavior.
On October 17, 2025, the 44-year-old Concord resident was convicted of two felony counts—committing a lewd act on a child and sending harmful material to a child—along with two misdemeanor counts of annoying or molesting a minor and one misdemeanor count of sexual battery. The jury also determined that Moseby exploited vulnerable victims, demonstrated planning and sophistication in his crimes, and abused a position of trust.
Moseby has been out on $200,000 bail since his September 2022 arrest and will remain free until his December 19, 2025 sentencing.
Moseby’s crimes came to light in September 2022 when he was arrested for sending a video of himself masturbating to a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old via Snapchat. Moseby claimed the video was meant for an adult online sex worker, but the incident prompted additional victims to come forward with allegations spanning his time as both a biology teacher at San Ramon Valley High School and a cheerleading coach at NorCal Elite in San Ramon.
According to prosecutors, Moseby engaged in a pattern of grooming and abuse. He made inappropriate sexual comments to students and discussed their bodies. He groped at least one victim during cheer practice “under the guise of spotting for a back handspring.”
Several alleged victims required therapy animals while testifying during the six-week trial.
What makes this case especially troubling is that the San Ramon Valley Unified School District hired Moseby despite his documented criminal history:
Despite these red flags and multiple student complaints about inappropriate comments, the district’s response was to transfer Moseby from the high school to Diablo Vista Middle School in 2022—giving him access to even younger students rather than removing him from the classroom.
In early 2022, before his arrest, a group of freshman boys taped a poster to Moseby’s classroom door calling him a “pedophile.” School administrators treated the incident as targeted harassment rather than investigating the students’ concerns.
The Moseby case demonstrates how institutional silence enables predators to continue harming children. When schools fail to thoroughly vet employees and dismiss student complaints, they create conditions where abuse can flourish.
Several of Moseby’s alleged victims have filed a lawsuit against the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, alleging that officials failed to respond appropriately to warning signs.
