Father William M. Walsh

Breaking News

Herman Law Seeks Justice For Survivors

Father William M. Walsh served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston from his ordination in 1971 until he was placed on administrative leave in 2004. His assignments included Blessed Sacrament Church in Jamaica Plain, St. Joseph’s in Hyde Park, St. Edward’s in Brockton, and St. Mary of the Annunciation in Danvers, where he served as parochial vicar from 1997 until his suspension.

In early 2004, Archbishop Sean O’Malley asked Father Walsh to accept a voluntary leave of absence after a survivor came forward alleging that Father Walsh had sexually abused a child during his ministry. Archdiocesan files documented earlier allegations as well: a 1980 report characterized as “third-hand” that was not substantiated, and two anonymous letters received after January 2001 alleging abuse of boys during his time at St. Edward’s in Brockton — neither of which resulted in a formal complaint.

One survivor alleged that Father Walsh sexually abused him approximately a dozen times beginning around 1985, when the survivor was 12, while Father Walsh was assigned to St. Joseph’s in Hyde Park. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred at the parish, at a parking lot in Jamaica Plain, at Salisbury Beach, and in New Hampshire. The Archdiocese reportedly settled that claim for an undisclosed sum.

Father Walsh was laicized in 2011 through a voluntary canonical process and was subsequently included on the Archdiocese of Boston’s August 2011 list of accused clergy under Category B — a designation that reflects the voluntary nature of the process and does not constitute a determination of guilt.
