1 800 686 9921Father Vernon Kelly, also known as John Kelly, has been credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor during his association with the Diocese of Springfield. He served as Vocations Director for the Passionists, visiting their monastery at Our Mother of Sorrows in West Springfield between 1961 and 1964. The Diocese of Springfield’s 2021 Report of Findings determined that an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor against Father Kelly, with reported conduct occurring in 1965, met the standard of credibility. At least one claim against him was also included in a Diocese of Springfield settlement with 59 plaintiffs in November 2008. Father Kelly was laicized in 1967, ending his formal ministry within the Church.
These credible findings, and the settlements that followed, reflect both the seriousness of the allegations against Father Kelly and the lasting harm experienced by survivors. Those who may have been affected by his alleged conduct continue to grapple with its effects, underscoring the need for healing, acknowledgment, and accountability.

Survivors who experienced abuse by Father Vernon Kelly may be able to pursue justice through civil proceedings, which offer a potential path toward accountability and recognition of harm. Civil action may provide an opportunity to formally document the alleged abuse, offering survivors a path toward acknowledgment even decades after the incidents occurred. In some cases, settlements may provide financial resources to support therapy, medical care, and other needs related to the trauma endured.
Pursuing civil action may empower survivors to reclaim a sense of agency and assert control over their own narratives. Civil proceedings not only may offer individual validation but also may reinforce institutional accountability — highlighting systemic failures and encouraging safer environments for future generations. This process can support emotional recovery and reinforces the principle that no abuse should remain unchallenged.
