1 800 686 9921Father Varghese Pereppadan was a visiting priest from the Diocese of Irinjalakuda in India who came to the United States for studies and ministry. He arrived in Massachusetts in October 2003 and began working at Our Lady of the Presentation Church in Brighton while pursuing his education in Cambridge. Within a year of his arrival, Pereppadan was accused of sexually molesting a teenage girl at the parish — an allegation that led to criminal charges and a court-supervised resolution.
In August 2004, Pereppadan was arraigned in Brighton District Court on three counts of indecent assault and battery. The Archdiocese of Boston immediately revoked his ministerial faculties and removed him from public ministry and the parish residence following the accusation. In December 2004, as part of a plea agreement, Pereppadan admitted to charges of indecent assault and battery and was sentenced to one year of probation. Under the terms of the agreement, the charges were to be dropped upon his successful completion of the probationary period.
Notably, Pereppadan’s name was omitted from the Boston Archdiocese’s 2011 database of accused clergy — a database that the Boston Globe reported excluded the names of at least 70 religious order and visiting clerics accused of sexual abuse. His omission raises questions about institutional transparency and the extent to which the archdiocese tracked visiting clergy who served within its borders.
With decades of dedicated advocacy, we have held abusers and institutions accountable, helping survivors secure justice and the resources to move forward.

We are honored to have guided thousands of survivors through the legal process, offering support, advocacy, and the resources they need to reclaim their lives.
Civil litigation may allow survivors of Father Pereppadan to seek recognition of the harm they suffered and to pursue institutional accountability. Massachusetts civil law may provide mechanisms for survivors to bring claims even when criminal proceedings have been resolved. Survivors may have avenues to seek financial compensation and formal acknowledgment of their experiences through the civil courts.
Civil litigation may also examine the Archdiocese’s supervisory actions after allegations against Father Pereppadan surfaced and seek to hold the institution accountable for any failures to protect children in its care. Beyond financial recovery, civil proceedings can result in documented acknowledgment of a survivor’s trauma — an outcome that many survivors find meaningful in its own right.
Civil cases may also contribute to broader systemic reform by shedding light on institutional vulnerabilities and supporting stronger child protection policies for future generations.
