1 800 686 9921Father Thomas P. Forry served in the Archdiocese of Boston and has been publicly named as credibly accused of sexually abusing a preteen boy. In 1984, therapists recommended that Forry receive long-term hospitalization and treatment, but he refused. His personnel file documents that the Archdiocese was aware of allegations of both sexual abuse and physical abuse against a minor, as well as inappropriate relationships with women. Despite this knowledge, Forry was permitted to serve as an Army chaplain from 1988 to 1992.
The Archdiocese placed him on administrative leave in 2002 and laicized him in 2006. One known sexual abuse matter was settled in December 1993 for $30,000. As of October 2008, Forry was living in South Boston. The Boston Archdiocese’s official list, published in August 2011, reflects that the matter was concluded canonically through the Church’s internal processes.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Father Thomas P. Forry face an institutional record spanning more than two decades of documented violence and misconduct — allegations the record suggests church officials had knowledge of but did not adequately address. Survivors may have the ability to pursue civil remedies to seek accountability from the Archdiocese of Boston.
Depending on individual circumstances and applicable Massachusetts law, survivors harmed by clergy may be able to pursue civil claims for negligent supervision, failure to protect minors, and institutional concealment that permitted sexual abuse to continue. Even when sexual abuse occurred decades ago, survivors may be able to seek financial compensation, acknowledgment of harm, and transparency regarding the Church’s knowledge of and response to these allegations.
Civil litigation can provide survivors with a structured path to reclaim agency over their experiences and to formally confront the institution responsible for oversight failures. By pursuing legal action, survivors contribute to systemic accountability and may help encourage religious organizations to implement safeguards to protect future generations. The legal process can give survivors a formal platform to be heard and to hold accountable the institution that failed to protect them.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
