Herman Law Seeks Justice For Survivors

Father Thomas F. Motherway was ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston in 1969 and served at parishes across the archdiocese, including assignments in Boston, Peabody, Lynn, Randolph, and Monponsett. In February 1985, he was seriously injured in an automobile accident, and by 1995 was confined to a wheelchair. He was placed on permanent disability status in 1998 and died in April 2003.

In March 2003, Father Motherway was among 48 priests whose names were removed from the Official Catholic Directory following allegations of sexual abuse. In August 2011, the Archdiocese of Boston published a formal list of clergy accused of the sexual abuse of minors; Father Motherway was included under Category E, designated for deceased clergy for whom criminal or canonical proceedings were not completed at the time of death, but whose allegations had been publicly reported. Father Motherway was also included on the Diocese of Fall River’s publicly accused clergy list, published in January 2021. The Diocese of Fall River’s list identifies clergy against whom allegations of sexual abuse of a minor have been publicly reported, while noting that the Diocese lacks sufficient information to make its own determination of credibility regarding each individual listed.
