1 800 686 9921Father Thomas A. Kane was accused in a 1993 lawsuit of sexually abusing a boy over an extended period from 1968 to 1979, beginning when the victim was just nine years old. Allegations stated that Kane offered the boy to other priests for sexual abuse, compounding the severity of his misconduct. Kane had a long history within the diocese and was closely associated with Revs. Thomas Teczar and Victor Frobas, reflecting connections that may have influenced his access to victims.
Beyond his clerical duties, Kane co-founded and directed the House of Affirmation, a treatment center for clergy in Whitinsville, Massachusetts. He left the center in 1986 after allegations of financial improprieties surfaced, including misappropriation of funds to purchase resort properties in Florida and Maine. Despite leaving the diocese in 1993, Kane continued to receive financial support while directing the Worldwide Teachers Institute in Guadalajara, Mexico, where young men and boys reportedly lived with him. Following the Boston news coverage of these allegations in 2002, Kane fled Mexico in December of that year. His voluntary laicization was announced on March 5, 2013, formalizing his removal from the priesthood.

Survivors of Father Thomas A. Kane have the right to pursue acknowledgment and accountability for the profound abuse they endured. Civil avenues allow victims to formally document the long-lasting effects of sexual abuse, including psychological trauma, disruption of personal development, and lasting emotional harm. The process can serve as an affirmation of the survivor’s lived experience and helps provide recognition for the suffering imposed by Kane’s actions.
Civil accountability also reinforces the broader societal record of abuse, offering survivors the ability to reclaim control over their narratives. Settlements or civil judgments do not erase the trauma but validate the victim’s experiences and ensure that institutions confront failures in oversight that permitted abuse to continue. These legal measures can also support systemic changes within organizations, preventing similar misconduct in the future. Justice in this context provides recognition, affirmation, and a foundation for healing.
