1 800 686 9921Father Thaddeus J. Kardas, a priest of the Diocese of Worcester, was accused in 1993 of sexually abusing a young girl beginning when she was 11 years old. According to the allegation, he referred to her as his girlfriend, kissed her in the rectory, and repeatedly attempted to caress her over the course of approximately a year. Kardas was in his mid-twenties at the time. Notably, this complaint was not the first — documentation indicates that another individual had raised concerns about Kardas’s conduct prior to the 1993 allegation.
The civil suit was settled in 1995 for $55,000, without any admission of liability by the diocese or Father Kardas. Following the sexual abuse allegations, Kardas was placed on administrative leave in 1993 and remained on leave until his death in August 2006.
If you or someone you know experienced similar abuse at the hands of Father Kardas, you are not alone — and you may have legal options.
With decades of dedicated advocacy, we have held abusers and institutions accountable, helping survivors secure justice and the resources to move forward.

We are honored to have guided thousands of survivors through the legal process, offering support, advocacy, and the resources they need to reclaim their lives.
Father Kardas died in August 2006, but his death does not necessarily extinguish the legal rights of those he may have harmed. Survivors who experienced sexual abuse within the Diocese of Worcester may have civil remedies available against the diocese as the institution responsible for his supervision and continued placement in ministry. An attorney can evaluate whether a claim may be viable based on the specific circumstances and applicable law.
Civil litigation can serve important purposes for survivors. It may provide financial recognition for the long-term consequences of trauma — including the cost of therapy and the impact on daily life — and it can create a formal record that validates a survivor’s experience. Holding institutions accountable through civil proceedings also serves a broader purpose: reinforcing that those entrusted with the care of children bear responsibility for the harm caused under their watch.
