1 800 686 9921Father Sydney H. Bayers was ordained in 1937 and served for decades as a priest within the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts, before his death in March 1979. Decades after his ministry, multiple survivors came forward with allegations of sexual abuse of minors.
In 1994, three sisters informed archdiocesan officials that Father. Sydney H. Bayers sexually abused them in the 1970s while their father was terminally ill. In 1996, another individual reported that Father. Sydney H. Bayers had sexually and physically abused him beginning around 1960, when he was 11 years old, and Father. Sydney H. Bayers “practically lived” in the family home after the boy’s father died.
These reports were received by the Archdiocese and are part of the public record of accused clergy. Father Bayers was included on the Archdiocese of Boston’s list of accused priests published in August 2011, more than three decades after his death.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Father Sydney H. Bayers may be able to pursue civil claims against the Archdiocese of Boston, which received allegations against him in 1994 and 1996 and included his name on its 2011 list of accused clergy. The nature of the allegations, which describe Father Sydney H. Bayers maintaining extended access to families in vulnerable circumstances, raises specific questions about the pastoral oversight provided by the Archdiocese of Boston and whether the pattern of his conduct was known or should have been recognized by Church officials during his decades of ministry.
Civil litigation may reveal internal records and personnel files from the Archdiocese that clarify what officials knew about Father Sydney H. Bayers during his active years and how the allegations received in 1994 and 1996 were handled. The multi-decade gap between his ministry and the emergence of allegations reflects the delayed reporting patterns that Massachusetts law is designed to accommodate.
For survivors, the legal process may offer compensation for therapy, emotional distress, and long-term psychological harm, as well as a formal record that validates experiences that went unacknowledged for years.
