Father Ronald E. Wamsher served as a priest within the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, where he held a position on the diocesan tribunal handling marriage annulments. Allegations of clergy sexual abuse against him emerged after four brothers filed suit against the diocese in 2003, claiming they had been abused by five priests between 1967 and 1983. Three of the four brothers alleged abuse by Father Wamsher specifically. Father Wamsher denied all allegations.
Despite the allegations, Father Wamsher was not placed on administrative leave until April 2004. In May 2005, the Diocese of Springfield announced that the Review Board had found the allegations against Father Wamsher to be credible, and Bishop Timothy A. McDonnell placed him under the conditions of the Dallas Norms, removing his priestly privileges. A canonical trial was subsequently ordered. Three claims against Father Wamsher were among those settled in November 2008 as part of a broader $4.5 million settlement between the Diocese of Springfield and clergy sexual abuse claimants. Father Wamsher’s name is included on the Diocese of Springfield’s list of credibly accused clergy.
