1 800 686 9921Father Ronald D. Provost was a priest within the Diocese of Worcester whose sexual abuse misconduct has been documented across several decades. Beginning as early as 1977, he took and collected nude and semi-nude photographs of boys. When these actions came to the attention of diocesan leadership in the early 1980s, Provost was sent to the House of Affirmation for evaluation and treatment. Despite this intervention, further allegations emerged — including a civil lawsuit filed in 2010 alleging sexual assault and abuse spanning from approximately 1979 to 1982.
In January 1993, Provost was convicted in Worcester Superior Court of soliciting a child to pose in a state of nudity, stemming from his photographing of a 10-year-old boy in a pool locker room in Gardner in 1992. He received a ten-year suspended prison sentence. The conviction was upheld by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 1994. In November 2021, Bishop Robert J. McManus announced that Provost had been laicized — formally dismissed from the clerical state by Pope Francis.
The history surrounding Father Provost illustrates the complex path survivors often face when navigating both criminal and civil avenues for justice, and the institutional failures that can allow harm to persist over time.

The case of Father Ronald D. Provost reflects how sexual abuse may span years and affect multiple individuals, often with delayed recognition or incomplete responses from Church authorities. Civil litigation can provide survivors with a framework to seek formal acknowledgment, accountability, and justice — examining not only a priest’s individual conduct but also the oversight and institutional decisions that may have allowed harm to continue.
Depending on the circumstances, Massachusetts law may allow survivors to file civil claims years or even decades after abuse occurred, recognizing the profound barriers many victims face in coming forward. An attorney may help evaluate whether a claim may be available in your specific situation. Pursuing a civil claim may offer financial restitution as well as a documented record of wrongdoing, helping to ensure that institutional failures and patterns of abuse are brought to light.
If you or a loved one may have experienced abuse by Father Provost or another member of the clergy in the Diocese of Worcester, you may be able to pursue a civil claim. Contact Herman Law today for a confidential consultation to discuss your potential legal options.
