1 800 686 9921Father Rene Gaudin entered religious life in 1949 and served in numerous locations throughout his ministry, including international assignments in Japan, Haiti, and the Bahamas, as well as in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Texas. Over his decades in ministry, he held parish and mission roles that brought him into contact with communities across multiple countries and states. He retired from active ministry in 1993 and died on June 27, 2001.
Allegations of sexual abuse against Gaudin were publicly disclosed in January 2011, when his name appeared on a list of accused clergy released by Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian. That list documented clergy against whom Garabedian’s firm had obtained settlements or arbitration awards on behalf of survivors. At least one claim involving allegations against Gaudin was connected to a process through the Boston Archdiocese. In January 2021, the Diocese of Fall River formally included Gaudin on its official list of credibly accused clergy — a designation applied to individuals against whom allegations were determined to meet the diocese’s semblance of truth standard.

Survivors of sexual abuse connected to Father Rene Gaudin may be able to pursue civil accountability even though he is deceased. Eligibility depends on applicable statutes of limitations, any legislative revival windows, and other case-specific factors. The Diocese of Fall River’s inclusion of Gaudin on its credibly accused list represents an institutional acknowledgment that allegations against him met the diocesan standard for credibility.
Survivors may be able to pursue civil litigation to examine not only the conduct of the individual priest but also the actions of Church leadership responsible for his oversight. Civil claims often focus on whether institutional officials were aware of misconduct, transferred clergy despite known complaints, or failed to warn parish communities. When dioceses or religious orders placed minors at risk through negligent supervision, they may be exposed to civil liability. Through litigation, survivors may be able to obtain internal documents shedding light on how allegations were handled and whether protective measures were in place or followed.
For many survivors, civil action is a step toward validation and healing. Financial recovery may support therapy and long-term care, but the broader impact involves institutional transparency. Public acknowledgment of credible allegations affirms survivor experiences and reinforces the obligation of religious organizations to implement meaningful child protection reforms.
