1 800 686 9921Rev. Ralph Herbert Adair was a priest ordained in 1973 who served in multiple parishes throughout the Diocese of Springfield in Massachusetts. Born in 1946, Adair worked in various capacities across Western Massachusetts for nearly two decades, from 1973 to 1988. During that time, he had several assignments in the Diocese and also worked in diocesan marriage counseling and youth counseling ministry from 1988 until his death in 1992.
The Diocese of Springfield, MA, named Adair publicly as credibly accused on its list published June 2, 2021, noting allegations that he sexually abused a minor in 1984. Because the allegations came to light only after Adair’s death on February 28, 1992, he did not have the opportunity to respond, and no criminal or canonical proceedings were completed. The Diocese’s Misconduct Commission determined the allegations to be credible based on the available evidence.

Survivors of clergy sexual abuse face unique challenges when seeking justice, particularly when the accused priest has died before allegations surface. While criminal prosecution becomes impossible after death, civil remedies remain available to survivors seeking accountability and healing.
Massachusetts law allows survivors to pursue civil claims against dioceses and religious institutions for negligent supervision, failure to protect minors, and institutional cover-ups that enabled abuse to continue. These cases often reveal patterns of institutional knowledge and deliberate concealment that allowed predatory clergy to maintain access to children despite warning signs.
For survivors of Father Ralph Herbert Adair, civil litigation serves multiple purposes beyond financial compensation. The legal process empowers survivors to confront the institution that failed them, demand transparency about what Church officials knew and when they knew it, and ensure that their stories become part of the public record. When survivors come forward decades after abuse occurred, they not only seek personal healing but also protect current and future generations by holding religious institutions accountable for failures that span generations.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
