1 800 686 9921Father Peter S. Kanchong was an extern priest from the Diocese of Ratchaburi, Thailand, who began working in the Archdiocese of Boston in 1977. Sexual abuse allegations against him include the prolonged sexual abuse of a young girl beginning when she was approximately 3 years old, continuing through age 9, as well as the abuse of her two brothers over a period of years. The abuse came to light in 1983 when the girl’s father discovered an assault in progress and the family filed a criminal complaint in Dorchester District Court. Kanchong was subsequently convicted and sentenced to probation.
Following the complaint, Cardinal Medeiros — Law’s predecessor — withdrew Kanchong’s priestly faculties, removing his right to say Mass or function publicly as a priest. After Cardinal Law took over the Archdiocese in 1984, he wrote to Bishop Thabping of the Ratchaburi Diocese requesting that Kanchong be recalled to Thailand. The Thai church agreed to order his return, but Kanchong refused to comply and remained in the Boston area.
Kanchong’s name was omitted from the Archdiocese of Boston’s August 2011 list of publicly accused clergy. He was later added to an updated list published in October 2018, where he is noted as absent without leave (AWOL). As of 2022, that status remained unchanged.

Massachusetts civil law may allow survivors to seek damages for the emotional, psychological, and other lasting harm caused by abuse. The effects of clergy sexual abuse can persist for decades and may include anxiety, depression, difficulty maintaining trust, and other significant impacts on daily life. Civil litigation is one avenue through which survivors can seek formal acknowledgment of those harms.
Clergy sexual abuse cases often examine not only the conduct of the individual accused but also the institutional response to known or suspected offenders — including whether church officials took appropriate action to protect children in their care. For many survivors, taking legal action has provided a measure of acknowledgment and empowerment. While outcomes vary by case, speaking with an attorney can be a meaningful first step toward understanding your options.
