1 800 686 9921Father Paul William Hurley served in the Archdiocese of Boston, MA, before criminal allegations brought his ministry to an end. He was accused of sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy between 1987 and 1988. According to prosecutors, the abuse allegedly involved repeated incidents during which the minor was paid between $80 and $100 per encounter.
In 2002, Father Hurley was arrested and indicted in connection with these allegations. He pleaded not guilty and publicly denied the accusations. The matter proceeded through the criminal courts, and in June 2006, he was convicted. He immediately began serving a three-year provisional sentence. In July 2006, he was formally sentenced to four years in prison followed by five years of probation.
He was involuntarily laicized in 2006; the Vatican’s decision was publicly announced in January 2007. After serving his sentence, he was released on probation. As of January 2010, he was reported to be living in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and was listed on the state’s sex offender registry as a Level 3 offender — the classification for individuals considered most likely to re-offend. The Archdiocese of Boston included his name on its list of accused clergy on August 25, 2011. Father Hurley died on January 11, 2016.

We are honored to have guided thousands of survivors through the legal process, offering support, advocacy, and the resources they need to reclaim their lives.
Civil litigation offers a separate path for survivors seeking acknowledgment and accountability. A civil lawsuit may provide survivors with an avenue to pursue financial compensation for counseling expenses, medical treatment, lost income, and the lasting impact of sexual abuse. It can also examine whether institutional failures within the Archdiocese contributed to the harm. When institutions fail to act on known warning signs, those institutions may also bear civil responsibility.
For many survivors, a civil action is about more than compensation. It is an opportunity to formally assert that what happened was wrong and that the damage was real. The legal process can create a public record and reinforce that sexual abuse within trusted institutions will not be ignored. Survivors of Father Paul William Hurley, or of other clergy within the Archdiocese of Boston, may be able to pursue civil claims and are encouraged to explore their legal options confidentially through a consultation to determine what course of action may best support their healing.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey.
