1 800 686 9921Father Michael John Carew served in ministry both internationally and within the Archdiocese of Boston. He worked in the Archdiocese of Accra, Ghana, from 1946 through 1957, before transferring to Boston, where he was formally incardinated in 1964. Carew later voluntarily left the priesthood and was laicized in 1971. After leaving the ministry, he married and raised a family.
In 2002, Carew was accused of sexually abusing two girls during the early 1960s while he was serving in parish assignments. Reports indicated there may have been a third female victim as well. During the period in question, Carew was assigned to Immaculate Conception Parish in Newburyport from April 1960 through February 1963.
The Archdiocese of Boston publicly identified Carew as an accused priest after his laicization, noting that the allegations surfaced years after he had left active ministry. His name was later included on lists of credibly accused clergy connected to the Church. Father Michael John Carew died in 2015.
With decades of dedicated advocacy, we have held abusers and institutions accountable, helping survivors secure justice and the resources to move forward.
For over two decades, we have focused solely on advocating for survivors, combining legal skill with compassion to guide them toward justice and healing.
We are honored to have guided thousands of survivors through the legal process, offering support, advocacy, and the resources they need to reclaim their lives.
Survivors of sexual abuse involving Father Michael John Carew may be able to pursue civil claims even though he was laicized prior to the public disclosure of allegations. Leaving the priesthood does not eliminate institutional responsibility when abuse occurred during Church assignments.
Civil litigation may allow survivors to examine whether Church officials had prior knowledge of misconduct, failed to act on warning signs, or inadequately supervised clergy. Religious institutions may be held liable for negligence when they failed to protect minors under their care.
For survivors, pursuing justice may provide acknowledgment and validation of deeply personal harm. The legal process may create an opportunity to obtain institutional records, witness testimony, and formal recognition of wrongdoing.
Financial compensation may support therapy, medical care, and long-term recovery needs. However, many survivors pursue legal action to establish accountability and prevent future abuse. Coming forward contributes to transparency within religious institutions and helps strengthen protective safeguards for future generations.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
