1 800 686 9921Father Maurice P. Karam served within the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, including an assignment at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (Maronite Rite) in Springfield. He has been credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor between 1967 and 1968 while serving at that parish — a period during which he held a position of spiritual authority within the Maronite Catholic community.
Karam died in January 2013. The Diocese of Springfield publicly named him as credibly accused on its official list released in June 2021, years after his death. The Diocese defines a “credible allegation” as one for which there is reasonable cause to believe the sexual abuse occurred — a standard comparable to a grand jury indictment. While not a definitive finding of guilt, the Diocese’s public disclosure reflects its determination that the allegation against Karam met this threshold and warranted inclusion on its official accounting of clergy with substantiated claims of sexual abuse.

Survivors of alleged sexual abuse by Father Maurice P. Karam may have avenues to seek civil accountability and recognition of their experiences. Civil proceedings may provide an opportunity to address the long-term consequences of sexual abuse, including emotional, psychological, and social harms that can persist throughout a survivor’s life. Filing a civil claim may allow survivors to have their experiences formally acknowledged and to pursue compensation for the lasting impacts they have suffered.
Pursuing civil accountability can also help survivors reclaim a sense of control and affirm that their suffering was real and significant — helping to counteract feelings of isolation or self-blame that are common among survivors of clergy abuse. Even when the accused is deceased, civil proceedings may offer a path toward closure and empowerment, supporting healing and personal restoration.
Civil accountability also reinforces broader societal awareness of institutional failures, encouraging systemic changes that may help prevent similar abuse in the future. Justice in this context is both restorative and protective — providing survivors a voice and contributing to meaningful institutional accountability.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
