1 800 686 9921Father Manuel Andrade Jr. was born in 1926 and ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Fall River in 1949. Over the course of his ministry, he served at numerous parishes across southeastern Massachusetts, including St. Anthony of Padua and Our Lady of the Angels in Fall River, Santo Cristo and St. John of God in Somerset, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Our Lady of Health, and St. John the Baptist in New Bedford, Immaculate Conception in New Bedford, Espirito Santo in Fall River, St. Michael in Fall River, and St. Anthony in Taunton.
In 2021, the Diocese of Fall River publicly named Andrade as credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. The designation indicates the Diocese found the allegation met its internal credibility standard. Andrade died in 1995, before any canonical process could be completed.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Father Manuel Andrade Jr. may be able to pursue civil claims against the Diocese of Fall River despite Andrade having died in 1995 and criminal prosecution no longer being possible. Massachusetts law may allow survivors to seek accountability from religious institutions responsible for supervising clergy and protecting minors in their care.
Civil litigation may compel the Diocese to produce internal records, personnel files, and communications that shed light on what Church officials knew about Andrade’s conduct across his many assignments and what steps, if any, were taken in response. The Diocese’s own credibility determination confirms that the allegations against him met its internal standard — which may be relevant to establishing institutional awareness.
For survivors, civil claims may provide financial compensation for therapy, medical care, and long-term psychological harm. They may also create a formal record that validates survivor experiences and demands transparency from an institution whose oversight failures enabled abuse. The Diocese of Fall River’s public acknowledgment is a starting point, not an endpoint, and civil proceedings may allow survivors to pursue the full measure of accountability that disclosure alone cannot provide.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
