Father Leonard F. Stanton was ordained on January 6, 1943, for the Archdiocese of Boston. He served at parishes in Abington and Malden before transferring to the Diocese of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1946. He spent the majority of his career there, serving at multiple parishes and holding diocesan leadership roles, including Diocesan Director of Catholic Boy Scouts and Coordinator of Religious Education. He died on April 3, 1997.
In September 2002, Father Stanton was named as one of twelve priests accused of sexual abuse in a civil lawsuit filed on behalf of twenty-seven plaintiffs. The suit alleged that the Archdiocese of Boston conspired to cover up the sexual misconduct of its clergy over a period of more than fifty years. Father Stanton, who was deceased at the time the suit was filed, was among four deceased priests named.
In March 2019, the Diocese of Sioux Falls published a list of priests with substantiated allegations of child sexual abuse. Father Stanton was included on that list, with his faculties for priestly ministry noted as having been permanently removed in April 1993.
