1 800 686 9921Father Lawrence Buckley was a Redemptorist priest who served for more than 30 years in the Archdiocese of Boston, following earlier assignments in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. He was assigned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he is alleged to have sexually abused a seven-year-old altar boy beginning in 1987.
According to the survivor, the alleged sexual abuse began in the sacristy and continued for four years, even occurring on the day Father Buckley arrived at his home to inform the family of his father’s death. The survivor did not disclose the sexual abuse until he became a parent himself. He came forward to the Archdiocese of Boston in 2019, and a civil lawsuit was filed and settled in 2020 for $85,000. Father Buckley died on October 11, 2008. Despite the settlement, the Archdiocese omitted his name from its public list of accused clergy because he was a member of a religious order.

Father Lawrence Buckley’s case is one of several that exposed a significant transparency gap within the Archdiocese of Boston: the practice of excluding religious order priests from the archdiocesan public list of accused clergy, even when settlements had been paid to their victims.
As the survivor who came forward noted publicly, he was a Catholic altar boy at a Catholic church, and the institutional distinction between a diocesan priest and a Redemptorist priest meant nothing to him in terms of the harm he suffered. His frustration, and that of other survivors in similar situations, helped spur broader conversations about accountability standards and what transparency truly requires.
The $85,000 settlement reached in 2020, more than 30 years after the alleged sexual abuse began, demonstrates that civil justice may be achievable even across a very long timeline. The Archdiocese’s payment of that settlement, despite declining to list Buckley on its public roster, acknowledges the reality of the harm while stopping short of full transparency.
If you experienced sexual abuse by Father Lawrence Buckley, or by another Redemptorist priest serving in the Boston area, a civil claim may be available.
