1 800 686 9921Father Julian Edward Rondeau was a member of the Society of Mary (the Marists) and served in parishes across Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, including within the Archdiocese of Boston. In correspondence exchanged between 1992 and 1993, Father Rondeau admitted to a victim that he had sexually abused her and her sister. The abuse apparently occurred in the mid-1960s, when the primary victim was approximately ten years old. The girls came from a family that was both financially and emotionally dependent on Father Rondeau — a dynamic that placed them in a particularly vulnerable position and reflects an exploitation of trust, dependency, and circumstance.
A notable irregularity in the institutional record concerns Father Rondeau’s listed ordination year. Beginning with the 1993 edition of the Official Catholic Directory — the same period in which the allegations came to light — his ordination year was changed from 1945 to 1971. No public explanation has been offered for this alteration. Father Julian Edward Rondeau died on June 28, 1999.

The circumstances surrounding Father Rondeau’s conduct reflect a dynamic in which institutional and personal authority were used to gain access to vulnerable children. The family’s financial and emotional dependence on Father Rondeau created conditions that facilitated abuse and likely complicated the ability of victims to report what had occurred. His written correspondence from 1992 and 1993, which appears to constitute an admission of the abuse, provides a documented foundation for the allegations against him.
The change to his ordination year in the Official Catholic Directory — altered around the time sexual abuse allegations emerged — has never been publicly explained. When institutional records are changed in the wake of abuse disclosures, the circumstances surrounding that change become relevant to any broader examination of how the Archdiocese of Boston responded to allegations made against priests in its orbit.
Civil accountability in clergy sexual abuse cases may extend beyond the individual priest to include the institutions responsible for his oversight and placement. For survivors who may have been harmed during Father Rondeau’s ministry, Massachusetts law may provide legal options that account for the significant obstacles childhood sexual abuse survivors face in coming forward — particularly when that abuse involved exploitation of trust and familial dependency.
