1 800 686 9921Father Jude Dowling was a Catholic priest ordained in 1954 and a member of the Passionist religious order who served in the Diocese of Springfield, MA, from 1978 until 1993. During that time, Father Jude Dowling was assigned to Our Mother of Sorrows Monastery in West Springfield. He died on October 17, 2001.
In June 2021, the Diocese of Springfield publicly included Father Jude Dowling on its list of clergy against whom credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors were made. The reported incidents span two separate periods — from 1969 to 1975 and 1980 to 1985. The diocese’s inclusion of Father Jude Dowling reflects a finding of credibility that originated with the Congregation of the Passion of St. Paul of the Cross Province and was subsequently verified by the Diocese of Springfield. As the diocese has noted, a credible allegation represents reasonable cause to believe the abuse occurred; it is not a definitive finding of guilt.
The Diocese of Springfield has undertaken efforts in recent years to increase transparency about historical abuse by clergy, including through the expanded 2021 disclosure that brought Father Jude Dowling’s name to public attention.

Survivors who allege abuse by Father Jude Dowling may be able to pursue civil claims related to that alleged conduct and his ministry within the Diocese of Springfield from 1978 to 1993. The reported abuse spans two distinct periods — from 1969 to 1975 and 1980 to 1985 — with Father Jude Dowling’s assignment to Our Mother of Sorrows Monastery in West Springfield falling within and following the alleged period of conduct. Survivors and their attorneys may wish to examine what oversight was exercised by both the Passionist order and the Diocese of Springfield during the relevant periods.
Civil litigation may provide a mechanism through which survivors could seek access to institutional records and communications relevant to their claims.
Civil proceedings may potentially provide survivors with financial compensation for harms suffered as a result of abuse. They may also create a formal record of survivors’ claims and the alleged scope of institutional conduct, offering some survivors a measure of acknowledgment that extends beyond private resolution.
