1 800 686 9921Father Joseph Angeli was born in Italy and ordained in 1942 as a priest of the Diocese of Tacna, Peru. After 27 years in South America, he was assigned to Boston, Massachusetts in 1959. He was transferred to the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 1960, was in the Diocese of El Paso by 1965, and moved to the Diocese of Las Cruces when it was created in 1982. He died on May 4, 1993.
Angeli has been named as credibly accused across multiple dioceses. On January 19, 2011, he was included on a publicly posted list of accused priests and religious, and according to a representative for the victims, at least one claim connected to the Archdiocese of Boston has already been settled. He was omitted from the 2011 Boston Archdiocese disclosure database because he was classified as a ‘visiting priest.’ In December 2015, a woman publicly stated she was abused as a minor by Angeli in the early 1960s in Hondo, Texas. He was subsequently placed on the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s list on January 31, 2019, and on the Diocese of Las Cruces’s list on June 24, 2019. In July 2024, a lawsuit was filed alleging that Angeli sexually abused an altar boy, age 10, multiple times around 1980 in Tortugas.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Father Joseph Angeli who were harmed during his assignment in Boston may have the right to pursue civil accountability through Massachusetts courts. Although Angeli died in 1993, at least one claim connected to the Archdiocese of Boston has already resulted in a settlement, demonstrating that civil claims connected to his conduct have been pursued and resolved.
Civil litigation may allow survivors to examine the decisions made by the Archdiocese of Boston and other dioceses surrounding Angeli’s placement, supervision, and transfers across multiple states. His classification as a “visiting priest” — which led to his omission from early Archdiocesan disclosure lists — raises serious questions about how institutions tracked and monitored clergy whose assignments crossed diocesan boundaries.
For survivors, civil claims may provide an avenue to seek compensation for emotional harm, therapy, and long-term psychological effects of sexual abuse, while also placing their experiences on the formal record. Legal proceedings may require the relevant dioceses to account for institutional decisions that may have allowed harm to remain unaddressed for decades.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
