1 800 686 9921Father John P. Cronin served for many years as a priest in the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, with assignments at parishes including St. Patrick in Fall River, St. Vincent’s Home, St. Bernard in Assonet, St. Joseph in Taunton, Our Lady of Fatima in Swansea, and St. Joseph in North Dighton.
In September 2002, Cronin’s name appeared on a publicly released list of priests investigated for allegations of sexual misconduct by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
In October 2002, Cronin acknowledged that a woman’s allegation of an inappropriate relationship — one she said occurred when she was a teenager — had “some truth” to it. Although he was sent for evaluation and found not to be a threat, additional allegations surfaced in the mid-1990s, leading to restrictions on his ministry and the eventual removal of his faculties.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Father John P. Cronin may be able to pursue civil claims against the Diocese of Fall River. The Diocese received allegations against Cronin in the mid-1990s, restricted his ministry, and ultimately removed his faculties in response. Those institutional actions reflect that the Diocese was made aware of concerns about Cronin’s conduct, and civil litigation may allow survivors to examine what officials knew, when they knew it, and what steps were taken across his assignments at multiple Fall River parishes.
Cronin’s statement in October 2002 that an allegation against him had “some truth” to it may be significant in the context of civil proceedings, as it reflects a degree of personal admission potentially relevant to both individual and institutional accountability. Civil litigation may seek to build on that acknowledgment, including through efforts to compel the Diocese to produce internal records and communications related to the mid-1990s allegations, the evaluation process, and the decisions surrounding the restriction of his ministry.
The Diocese’s receipt of allegations in the mid-1990s and its subsequent restriction of Cronin’s ministry may provide a basis for civil claims examining whether the institutional response was adequate to protect those who may have encountered him during and after that period. Civil proceedings may enable survivors to seek compensation for therapy, emotional distress, and long-term psychological harm, and may also create a formal record of the Diocese’s knowledge and response.
