1 800 686 9921Father John J. Gallagher was an Augustinian priest who served in multiple states, including Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Florida. While assigned to St. Mary’s Parish in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he coached youth basketball and swim teams associated with the parish and school — roles that gave him direct, unsupervised access to children. In a 2005 civil lawsuit, a woman alleged that Gallagher sexually abused her over several years between 1972 and 1978 while she was a child. The case involved multiple plaintiffs and named several priests as defendants.
Subsequent civil actions expanded the scope of allegations. Settlement announcements in 2018 and 2020 involved numerous survivors who alleged sexual abuse at St. Mary’s during the 1970s. Survivors alleged they were between the ages of 8 and 14 at the time of the sexual abuse. Additional claims continued to surface, including another settlement announced in 2021. Gallagher died on December 12, 2006. Because he was a member of a religious order rather than a diocesan priest, his name was omitted from at least one official archdiocesan list of accused clergy. Civil litigation was pursued through the Augustinian order directly.

Survivors of sexual abuse connected to Father John J. Gallagher retain the right to pursue justice through civil litigation, regardless of the priest’s death. Civil courts provide a forum where survivors can present evidence, establish institutional responsibility, and seek financial compensation for the harm they endured.
Claims involving religious orders and dioceses often examine whether Church leadership failed in screening, supervision, or response to misconduct reports. When institutions allow clergy continued access to minors despite warning signs, they may be held accountable for negligence. Civil discovery can uncover internal records, correspondence, and prior complaints that were never disclosed publicly.
For many victims, the legal process represents more than compensation. It offers formal acknowledgment of wrongdoing and creates a public record of sexual abuse that institutions cannot ignore. Settlements and verdicts also reinforce the obligation of religious organizations to implement safeguards that protect children. By coming forward, survivors help expose systemic failures and contribute to broader reforms designed to prevent future abuse.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
