1 800 686 9921Father John H. Curley was ordained in 1966 and served in multiple parishes and Catholic institutions within the Archdiocese of Boston, including assignments at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Braintree and as executive director of the Pilgrim Center, a residential program for troubled youth in Braintree.
Curley has been identified in a 2001 internal archdiocese report that summarized abuse allegations and associated settlement costs. A survivor identified only as David has alleged that Curley sexually assaulted him in 1981, when he was 12 years old and residing at the Pilgrim Center. David received a settlement from the Archdiocese of Boston in November 2020 following an arbitration process. Despite this settlement, the Archdiocese did not include Curley on its public roster of accused clergy — an omission that advocates and survivors have criticized as inconsistent with the Archdiocese’s stated commitment to transparency.
Curley died on November 1, 1999. The record of allegations against him remains part of the public documentation intended to inform sexual abuse survivors and the community about past clergy misconduct.

Survivors who were sexually abused by Father John H. Curley may be able to pursue civil claims against the Archdiocese of Boston. Civil litigation can examine what Archdiocesan officials knew about Curley throughout his assignments across multiple parishes and institutions — including at the Pilgrim Center — and whether any concerns about his conduct were raised or addressed during his active years. The scope of his ministry and his sustained access to vulnerable youth at a residential facility raise legitimate questions about institutional oversight.
Civil proceedings may provide compensation for therapy, emotional distress, and long-term psychological harm. They can also produce a formal legal record that examines the Archdiocese’s supervisory responsibilities across the full timeline of Curley’s ministry and documents whether institutional decisions connected to his assignments were appropriate.
