1 800 686 9921Father John A. Dunn was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston in 1960 and served in several parish assignments across the region during the 1960s and early 1970s. He was laicized in October 1973 and married in January 1974 after leaving the priesthood.
In 1993, the Archdiocese of Boston received a complaint alleging that Dunn repeatedly sexually abused a boy, then between 12 and 13 years old, who lived near the rectory and delivered newspapers to St. Mary of the Assumption in Hull, during 1967 and 1968. According to that complaint, Dunn allegedly participated in the abuse alongside the parish pastor and another priest assigned to St. Mary’s.
Records indicate that Dunn’s name was included in the Archdiocese of Boston’s August 2011 publication of clergy accused of the sexual abuse of a minor. Dunn appears in the category of priests who had already been laicized at the time the public accusation was made. The Archdiocese stated that inclusion in this category does not constitute a determination of guilt.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Father John A. Dunn may be able to pursue civil claims arising from conduct that allegedly occurred during his assignment to St. Mary of the Assumption in Hull. The complaint received by the Archdiocese in 1993 alleged that the abuse involved multiple clergy at the same parish, which may raise questions about whether supervisory failures at the institutional level contributed to the harm alleged.
Civil litigation may provide a means to seek the production of records related to that parish and the clergy assigned there, potentially clarifying what Archdiocesan officials knew and what steps were or were not taken in response to allegations involving those priests.
Where a diocese is alleged to have failed its duty of care — through negligent hiring, inadequate supervision, or concealment of known risks — survivors may have grounds to pursue civil claims for the resulting harm. Each survivor who comes forward may help shed light on the institutional conditions that allegedly allowed abuse to continue.
Civil cases may also serve as a means of seeking compensation for the emotional, psychological, and spiritual harm survivors have suffered.
