Father James T. Walsh was a Roman Catholic priest assigned to the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts. He died in 1970. In March 2005, a civil lawsuit was filed in Hampden Superior Court alleging that Father Walsh had sexually abused a then-approximately-15-year-old boy, with the alleged abuse occurring once at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. The lawsuit named Father Walsh alongside six other deceased clergymen — including two bishops and five additional priests — as well as the Dioceses of Springfield and Worcester.
Both dioceses denied the allegations. The Diocese of Worcester stated it had investigated the claims and found no basis for credibility. The Diocese of Springfield similarly stated that nothing in its records supported the allegations. Father Walsh had died thirty-five years before the lawsuit was filed and was never able to respond to the claims against him.
