1 800 686 9921Father James Paul Menge served as a priest in the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, over a career spanning nearly four decades. In November 2008, the Diocese of Springfield provided $4.5 million in compensation to 59 abuse survivors. Separately, a Greenfield law firm reported that same month that it had secured an individual financial settlement from a survivor who named Father Menge as the perpetrator of abuse. Father Menge retired in June 2000 and passed away on August 6, 2010, at the age of 74.
Reports from more than one person that Father Menge engaged in the sexual abuse of a minor led to his addition to the Diocese of Springfield’s list of credibly accused clergy on September 1, 2021 — the first priest added to that list after the Diocese expanded its policy in 2021 to include clergy who died before a survivor came forward. According to the Diocese’s entry, the alleged abuse occurred between 1962 and 1970, a period during which Father Menge served at multiple parishes across the Diocese.

The allegations surrounding Father James Paul Menge reflect the serious and enduring impact that childhood sexual abuse may have on those who experienced it. Civil litigation may provide survivors with an avenue to seek accountability for both the alleged misconduct of the priest and the Diocese’s handling of complaints and assignment decisions.
Massachusetts law may provide avenues for survivors to come forward years after the alleged events, particularly in cases involving childhood abuse — an attorney can advise on whether this may apply to a particular survivor’s circumstances. Civil litigation may allow examination of whether diocesan leadership took adequate steps to protect children, including how it responded to complaints and made assignment decisions. Even when a priest has retired or passed away, survivors may be able to pursue civil remedies and seek acknowledgment of the harm they allege they suffered. Such actions may allow institutional decisions and alleged historical abuses to be examined and documented in a formal legal record. Survivors deserve to have their experiences recognized, both for their own sake and as a matter of public accountability for systemic failures.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
