1 800 686 9921Father James M. Gibbons was a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston who served at St. James Parish in Medford from the late 1950s through the early 1960s. In November 2022, a civil claim against Father Gibbons was settled. The claim alleged that he sexually abused a 12-year-old girl in approximately 1961 while she was a student at the parish school. According to the allegations, Gibbons fondled the girl’s breasts over her clothing.
Father Gibbons was assigned to St. James at the time of the alleged sexual abuse. The 2022 settlement came approximately 61 years after the sexual abuse allegedly occurred — a reminder that survivors of clergy sexual abuse may have legal options available to them even when significant time has passed.
Father Gibbons died on August 21, 2009.

For survivors who experienced sexual abuse connected to Father James M. Gibbons, civil claims may still be available depending on individual circumstances. The 2022 settlement is one example of a claim brought forward many decades after the alleged abuse took place. Whether similar options exist for others depends on the specific facts involved and applicable law — an attorney can evaluate what avenues, if any, may be available to you.
For many survivors, the legal process serves purposes beyond financial recovery. Coming forward and pursuing a claim may allow survivors to reclaim a sense of voice and agency. While civil settlements do not constitute admissions of liability or guilt, they can represent a meaningful step in a survivor’s path toward accountability and healing.
Civil litigation has also been an important tool for exposing how religious institutions supervised clergy and responded — or failed to respond — to sexual abuse allegations. When survivors come forward, they may help bring to light broader patterns of institutional conduct, contributing to greater transparency and reinforcing the importance of safeguarding children in religious and educational settings.
