Herman Law Seeks Justice For Survivors

Father James F. Talbot was ordained in 1968 and served within the Archdiocese of Boston as a member of the Jesuit order. He taught at Boston College High School from 1971 to 1980 and later at Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine, from 1980 to 1998. In 1998, allegations surfaced that he had abused a student between 1984 and 1985. He was suspended and sent to St. Luke’s Institute in Maryland for treatment, and that claim was settled in 2001.

In 2002, at least eight men alleged that Father Talbot had abused them as minors between 1972 and 1980. Criminal charges were filed and later dropped. In January 2003, fourteen claims were settled for $5.2 million. In 2005, Father Talbot pleaded guilty to raping two teenagers between 1977 and 1979 and was sentenced to five to seven years in prison. He was placed on the sex offender registry and released on March 18, 2011, later residing at the Vianney Center in Dittmer, Missouri. He was laicized in 2013.

In November 2017, Father Talbot was indicted for sexually assaulting an 8- or 9-year-old boy in Freeport, Maine, between May 1997 and June 1998. He initially pleaded not guilty but pleaded guilty on September 24, 2018, and received a ten-year sentence with all but three years suspended, plus a concurrent three-year sentence for unlawful sexual contact. At a Massachusetts Parole Board hearing, he reportedly admitted to abusing 89 boys. His name appeared on the Jesuits Northeast Province list of credibly accused on January 15, 2019. A new lawsuit was filed in April 2021. Father Talbot died on February 28, 2025, at a hospice center in St. Louis.
