1 800 686 9921Father Henry J. Rancourt served within the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked in parish settings that placed him in contact with young people. In 1992, an anonymous allegation surfaced claiming that Rancourt had kissed and molested Haitian boys at a Boston parish school. The sexual abuse allegation was received by the Archdiocese of Boston that same year.
Following the sexual abuse allegation, archdiocesan records continued to list Rancourt as active in ministry. As of June 27, 2009, the Archdiocese of Boston website showed him as active with an assignment at Marist House in Framingham. At least one claim involving Rancourt was subsequently resolved through a civil settlement. In April 2012, an attorney representing abuse survivors announced that a settlement had recently been reached in connection with allegations involving him.

For survivors of clergy abuse, civil litigation may offer an opportunity to address harm that went unrecognized for years. Cases involving Father Henry J. Rancourt illustrate that survivors may be able to pursue legal action even when significant time has passed since the alleged abuse occurred. Massachusetts law may allow individuals harmed as children to seek recourse through civil courts, recognizing that disclosure of abuse often happens later in life. Whether a claim may be pursued depends on individual circumstances, and consulting with an attorney is recommended.
Civil claims may examine both the actions of the individual priest and the broader institutional response. When a religious institution receives reports of misconduct but fails to intervene effectively, questions may arise regarding supervision, reporting obligations, and the continued placement of clergy in environments involving children. Legal proceedings may therefore explore whether institutional decisions contributed to ongoing harm.
The resolution of claims through settlement or court proceedings can provide survivors with financial compensation, but it also carries broader significance. Legal proceedings can create public records that acknowledge survivors’ experiences and may help bring allegations into the open that might otherwise remain unaddressed. Civil law provides a pathway through which survivors may be able to assert their rights, seek acknowledgment for the impact abuse has had on their lives, and contribute to a broader public record.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
