Father Gerard P. Walsh

Breaking News

Herman Law Seeks Justice For Survivors

Father Gerard P. Walsh served the Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, where he also held the role of chaplain with the Massachusetts State Police — a position he had occupied since the mid-1980s. This dual role as parish priest and law enforcement chaplain placed him in a significant position of trust within both the church and the broader community.

Father Walsh was ordained on May 25, 1974, and served at several Worcester Diocese parishes, including Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Leominster, St. James Parish in Grafton, and St. Roch Parish in Oxford, where he was pastor from 1993 until his removal in 2002.

In December 1998, a then-37-year-old man wrote to the Diocese of Worcester describing alleged sexual abuse by Father Walsh that he said had begun in the late 1970s, when he was an altar boy at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Leominster. The alleged abuse included inappropriate touching and exposure to sexually graphic materials. Father Walsh was also accused of providing alcohol to the individual while he was a minor. According to the accuser, the diocese did not take meaningful action in response to his letter.

In March 2002, after the accuser confronted Father Walsh directly, Father Walsh provided a written acknowledgement of inappropriate touching and having shown the individual sexually graphic materials. Bishop Daniel P. Reilly subsequently placed Father Walsh on administrative leave. He was also removed from his state police chaplaincy. In June 2003, Father Walsh submitted his resignation as pastor of St. Roch Parish. The Worcester County District Attorney’s office investigated but closed the criminal case due to statute of limitations issues. Father Walsh died on March 8, 2021, at the age of 74.
