Father Gerard E. Creighton

Breaking News

Herman Law Seeks Justice For Survivors

Father Gerard E. Creighton was publicly named in 2011 on the Archdiocese of Boston’s list of clergy accused of the sexual abuse of a child. The Archdiocese noted that no formal determination of guilt was made in his case, as he died before any proceedings were completed.

Personnel records document numerous assignment changes across his ministry — internal complaints reaching church leadership indicate that concerns about his conduct were known to the Archdiocese for decades. In 1977, a woman reported to the Archdiocese that she had witnessed two young girls reenacting a sexual act, with the girls saying they were imitating behavior they had witnessed involving Father Creighton. The Archdiocese took no formal action in response.

A lawsuit filed in 1998 alleged that Creighton repeatedly abused the plaintiff in 1958, when she was a 16- and 17-year-old high school student. That case was dismissed in 2003 due to the statute of limitations. Creighton retired in 1985, was placed on leave in 1997, and died on December 29, 2004.

Creighton’s documented assignment history and the timeline of reported complaints reflect the broader pattern of institutional failure to respond effectively to misconduct. Despite documented complaints reaching church leadership over several decades, the Archdiocese took no formal action against Creighton during his lifetime. While at least one civil lawsuit could not proceed due to the statute of limitations, the Archdiocese’s public disclosure of his name in 2011 formally acknowledged that allegations had been made.
