1 800 686 9921Father George J. Callaghan served in ministry within the Archdiocese of Boston and later became the subject of sexual misconduct allegations. Personnel files released in December 2002 detailed accusations that Callaghan made sexual advances toward a 17-year-old boy in 1983. The alleged incident occurred in a rectory bedroom at a parish in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The matter was ultimately settled.
The same individual also accused another priest assigned to the parish of repeated sexual abuse occurring months later. In addition, Father George J. Callaghan faced allegations of sexually harassing a 22-year-old male parish employee. That claim resulted in a settlement in 1993 totaling $17,000.
Callaghan was later transferred to the Augustinian headquarters in Pennsylvania and subsequently placed in a nursing facility due to Alzheimer’s disease. He died on December 24, 2008. His name was left out from the Archdiocese of Boston’s 2011 database of accused priests because he was a member of a religious order rather than diocesan clergy.

Survivors of sexual abuse or misconduct involving Father George J. Callaghan may be able to pursue justice through civil legal action. Even when allegations were addressed through private settlements, survivors may have the right to seek accountability from both the offender and affiliated religious institutions.
Civil litigation may examine whether Church authorities or religious orders had prior knowledge of misconduct, failed to intervene, or allowed continued access to minors and staff. Institutions that neglect their protective responsibilities may be held liable for negligence.
For survivors, legal action may offer acknowledgment of harm and a platform to have their experiences formally recognized. The process may uncover internal records, prior complaints, or institutional responses that were previously concealed.
Financial compensation may assist with recovery needs, but many survivors pursue civil claims to establish truth and accountability. Legal outcomes may also contribute to institutional reform by exposing failures that allowed misconduct to persist. Speaking out helps protect others and reinforces that authority figures must be held to the highest standards of conduct and oversight.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure.
