1 800 686 9921Father George A. Berthiaume was ordained in 1945 and served as a priest in the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts. During his ministry, he served as administrator of St. Michael’s Cathedral and as ecclesiastical secretary to Bishop Weldon from 1951 to 1961.
In 2005 — years after his death — allegations of sexual abuse were brought against Berthiaume in a civil lawsuit filed in Hampden County Superior Court. The plaintiff claimed to have been abused by Berthiaume and several other clergy members affiliated with the Dioceses of Springfield and Worcester. According to the plaintiff’s attorney, his client passed two polygraph examinations. The Diocese of Springfield stated that nothing in its records supports the allegations. The Diocese of Worcester, which investigated related claims against its own clergy, similarly concluded that those claims lacked credibility. Berthiaume died on December 3, 1985, and no criminal charges were filed against him during his lifetime.

The dioceses’ denials do not foreclose the ability of survivors to seek justice through the civil courts. Survivors who were sexually abused by Father George A. Berthiaume may have the right to pursue civil claims. Civil courts operate under evidentiary standards that are distinct from internal Church processes, and survivors may be able to present testimony and documentation through independent legal proceedings.
Civil litigation may also open avenues unavailable through diocesan investigations — including potential access to internal records, personnel files, and institutional communications through the discovery process. Given Berthiaume’s senior roles within the Diocese of Springfield, questions about what the institution knew and when may be relevant to civil legal proceedings.
Pursuing justice through the courts may provide survivors with validation, accountability, and potential compensation for counseling, medical care, and emotional harm — while also promoting transparency and helping prevent future abuse.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey.
Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
