1 800 686 9921Father Frederick J. Cartier Jr. served in the Archdiocese of Boston and was later accused of sexually abusing a minor during his time in parish ministry. Personnel records released in January 2003 brought renewed attention to allegations involving Father Frederick J. Cartier Jr.
He was accused in a letter of repeatedly molesting a teenage boy at the rectory of St. Barbara’s Parish in Woburn and during overnight camping trips to New Hampshire around 1970. His name also appeared among Massachusetts clergy listed in documents from a 2003 New Hampshire Attorney General’s report on clergy abuse in the Diocese of Manchester.
Father Frederick J. Cartier Jr. later underwent voluntary laicization, which was announced February 11, 2011. By August 2011, archdiocesan records confirmed that his case had been formally concluded under Church law. Father Cartier left active ministry in 1979 and was formally laicized in 2010. He is now deceased.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Father Frederick J. Cartier Jr. may have civil legal options. While Father Cartier was voluntarily laicized and later pursued a secular career, the Archdiocese of Boston, MA, may bear legal responsibility for the years he served as an active priest under its authority and supervision.
For survivors of Father Frederick J. Cartier Jr., civil litigation may offer an avenue to pursue accountability. Civil litigation may provide survivors with the opportunity to seek answers about what Archdiocesan officials knew during Father Cartier’s years of ministry, whether any concerns about his conduct with minors were raised before 1979, and how decisions about his assignments were made.
Coming forward also helps ensure that Father Cartier’s name remains part of the public record of the institutional failures of this period. Through civil litigation, survivors may be able to seek monetary compensation for psychological trauma, counseling costs, and the long-term effects of abuse.
